タイトル

Dear Land of Guyana （ディア　ランド　オブ　ガイアナ）‎/ 親愛なる地ガイアナ

憲法では「The national anthem of the State is the anthem known as “Green Land of Guyana”」と記載されているが、一般的に知られており、現地の人がアップしたものと思われる動画タイトル、駐インド大使館でも記載されていることから上記タイトルとした。なぜこのような齟齬が見られるのかは不明。
また、『Dear Land of Guyana, of Rivers and Plains』と紹介する情報元がいくつか見られたが、公の情報源から確認が取れなかった。

1917年イギリス生まれの英国国教会司祭。1971年逝去。

作曲

Robert Cyril Gladstone Potter（ロバートシリルグラッドストーンポッター）

1899年5月3日ガイアナ生まれの教師・作曲家。クイーンズカレッジで教育を受け、初等、中等、高等教育機関で教師としてのキャリアを積んだ。1948年から1956年の植民地時代は教育副長官を務めあげる。教育者としてのキャリアに加えて、作曲家としても活躍し『My Guyana El Dorado』など国歌以外にも多くの著名な作品を残している。1981年5月18日逝去。

成り立ち

1966年5月26日の独立まで、英領ギアナとしてイギリス国歌が歌われていた。
1960年、独立の決定を見越して議会の特別委員会が国歌の歌詞を募集。独立記念式典に向けての動きだった。212作品が寄せられたが決定するには至らなかったという。
1962年2月１日、国会議員のMohamed Safeeによって国歌を含む国のシンボルを決める選定委員会が設立。国のモットーなどが決まる中、国歌選定は難航する。選定委員会での決定が滞っていることから、当時の教育・地域開発大臣のC.V.Nunesが、国家歴史芸術委員会の委員長にプロセスを進めるように指示したものの、スムーズには行かなかった。
1965年、国歌選定が急務となり、当時の歴史芸術評議会（国家歴史芸術委員会の後継機関）の議長であったWinifred Gaskinが、国歌選定のための公的で透明性のあるプロセスを確立。同年、新たなコンペティションが開始され、国歌選定のために“幅広い文学的・詩的背景を持つ人物”からなる小委員会が設立された。この委員会は、国歌選定にあたる原則を以下のように策定した。
国歌は、威厳があり、愛国心を鼓舞し、「子供でも理解できるようなシンプルな発想」で、「盛り上がるように歌える」ものであり、国の特別な特性を映し出すものでなければならない。また、イデオロギーや政党のスローガン、著名人の名前などを過度に引用しないこと、宗教的な表現（特に宗派的な表現）を避けること、他の国歌と過度に似ていないこと
などを求めた。
最初に歌詞の選考が行われ266の応募があった。一次選考で40、最終選考で12まで絞られ、最終的に選ばれたのが、現在の歌詞として歌われているArchibald Leonard Lukerの作品だった。賞金は500ドルだったとされる。
歌詞決定後にメロディの公募も行われ、国内外から100以上集まり、最終的に3作品に絞られた。最終選考では、学校、青年団、宗教団体、政党などを代表する100人で構成される選定委員会が設立され選考が行われた。最終コンテストに先立ち、ラジオ・デメララのスタジオで3つの国歌の録音がされ、ソプラノ歌手のEvelyn John、バリトン歌手のStanley Ridley、ビスゴップ高校の合唱団、そして軍楽隊である英領ギアナ警察のバンドが参加した。
録音後、選定委員会メンバーが会場の政府技術研究所に集まり録音された音源を聞き採点。透明性を確保するため、メンバーには各作品の作曲家名を知らされず行われた。そこで選ばれたのがポッターの作品だった。
1966年4月21日、議会によってこの国歌が採択され、1966年5月26日、記念式典で無事演奏された。

国歌は、第2スケジュールに定められているように、「緑の国ガイアナ」として知られている国歌です。

7条　国のシンボルを尊重する義務
国旗、紋章、国歌、国の誓い、ガイアナ憲法を尊重し、いかなる場合にも適切な厳粛さをもってそれらを扱うことは、どこにいようとガイアナ市民の義務であり、ガイアナにいるすべての人の義務である。
